Do you have makeup brushes lying around getting dirty or smushed because they’re trapped in some drawer? There’s a better way to store your makeup brushes, and it doesn’t cost much. Here’s how to organize makeup brushes on a budget.
How to Organize Makeup Brushes on a Budget
All you’ll need is a cup or glass that’s shorter than the brushes and some rice (you can also use actual vase filler, but that can get expensive and you might already have a bag of rice lying around at home anyway :)).
I’m using a plastic cup that I got at Target a long time ago. I also painted it pink, though the paint is chipping a little now. If I wasn’t using this cup, I would just grab one of the mason jars in my cabinet.
I don’t have a ton of makeup brushes because I’m trying to maintain a minimalistic makeup collection, so if I just put the brushes in the cup directly, they just fall to one side and most of the cup is empty.
BUT if I fill the bottom of the cup with a few inches of rice first, then I can stick the brushes into it and they stand up perfectly! Hooray!
If you have any pretty glass beads or vase filler or little stones, you can use that too, but rice is just an inexpensive and readily available option.
Good luck!
Do you have a bunch of drugstore single eyeshadows lying around taking up a bunch of drawer space? Want to condense all your favorites into a cute travel-ready palette? Here’s how to depot eyeshadows to save space.
How to Depot Eyeshadows to Save Space
First, I will say that I only depotted drugstore eyeshadows. I’m a sucker for pretty packaging, so I wouldn’t take my fancy shmancy eyeshadows out of their pretty packages (except the time when my Urban Decay Naked palette got damaged on the outside, but that’s another story…).
I’ve had some of these eyeshadows for YEARS, so I figured I would take out all the eyeshadow pans and re-home them into a single, consolidated palette so they would be easier and more accessible to use. Also, when there’s a ton of single eyeshadows or quads or whatever, you might have them stuffed in a drawer somewhere and not even realize what makeup you already have. But if you know what eyeshadow or general makeup you have, you’re more likely to use it and you’ll also save money by not re-buying things you already have stashed away somewhere.
So basically depotting eyeshadows involves taking the metal tins out of the plastic / cardboard packaging (ideally with the eyeshadow still intact and not broken or smashed…) and then putting just the eyeshadow tins into another container, such as an empty palette. They make empty magnetic palettes that you can use just for this purpose!
You’ll have to be very careful about this. Basically you need a thin, sturdy edge like a cheap knife (don’t use anything nice because you might damage the knife like I did), tweezers, etc that you can use to get it between the edge of the plastic and the metal eyeshadow tin and pop it out.
I should warn you that some eyeshadows and brands are easier to depot than others, usually depending on how well attached or glued down the pan is to the plastic packaging. You do have to be careful because I ended up breaking a couple eyeshadows during this process, but that’s why I was only depotting cheap eyeshadow and not anything high end.
Take your time and be patient. You’ll ultimately end up with a bunch of single eyeshadow pans that you can put into an empty magnetic palette like this.
Good luck!
